OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - With the
help of two goals from freshman Christian Villasenor and some outstanding
play from the Ram defense, Texas Wesleyan defeated 21st-ranked Oklahoma
Christian, 2-1 Thursday evening.
Texas Wesleyan (9-5-1) opened the scoring
in the 53rd minute when Villasenor one-timed a kick into the back
of the net on a free-kick taken by sophomore Ricky Gallardo to put
the Rams ahead, 1-0. Villasenor struck again in the 58th minute
when he tapped in a cross by freshman Justin Ladner, to make the
score 2-0. Villasenor now has 20 goals on the season and is just
one goal behind school record-holder Jeff Henderson who tallied
21 goals in 1989.
Oklahoma Christian (9-3-1) fought back
with a goal in the 72nd minute by Kirk Jackson to cut the Rams lead
in half, 2-1.
The Ram defense kept the eagle offense
from any real chances the rest of the match. The Eagles outshot
the Rams, 19-9, however they could only manage a few scoring the
entire evening, as the Rams had seven shots on goal compared to
six for Oklahoma Christian.
"It doesn't really matter who we are
playing, he (Villasenor) continues to put the ball in the back of
the net," head coach Steve Jones said. "With Christian's
two goals and a great night for our team defense we were able to
knock off one of the best teams in our region. Hopefully, we can
carry this momentum into our last three conference games."
Texas Wesleyan returns to action Wednesday
when they travel to take on conference-rival Northwood at 3 p.m.
