FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas
Wesleyan lost a highly contested match, to Red River conference-rival
Houston Baptist, 36-34, 30-28, 30-27, Friday evening at the Sid
Richardson Gymnasium.
In game one, Texas Wesleyan (19-4, 14-2
RRAC) held a 29-28 lead but couldn't finish off the Huskies as the
two teams traded side-outs. Houston Baptist rallied with two straight
kills and a Ram hitting error to take game one.
"If we would have pulled off game
one the outcome of the match might have change," head coach
Rick Johansen said. "Houston Baptist rallied and took that
momentum into the next two games."
In games two and three the Lady Rams hung
with the Huskies but Houston Baptist (22-4, 13-0 RRAC) stepped it
up at the end of both games to sweep the Lady Rams, 3-0.
"I thought our girls played an excellent
game," Johansen said. "We just didn't make the plays at
key points in the match."
Sophomore Rachel Loftin led the Lady Rams
with 13 kills and six blocks. Junior Cortney Johansen dished out
35 assists and picked up six digs. Sophomore Susan Taylor tallied
20 digs to lead all Lady Rams.
The Texas Wesleyan volleyball team will
be back in action Saturday when they host conference-foe Huston-Tillotson
at 11 a.m.
