CEDAR HILL, Texas- Sophomore Gerardo
Avelar's goal in the 73rd minute gave Texas Wesleyan a 2-1 victory
over Red River Conference-rival Northwood Wednesday afternoon.
Texas Wesleyan (10-5-1, 4-1-1 RRAC) opened
the scoring in the 13th minute when freshman Christian Villasenor
smacked a one-timer past the Knight goalkeeper for his 21st goal
of the season to put the Rams ahead, 1-0. Sophomore Ricky Gallardo
was credited with the assist.
Northwood (7-9-1, 4-2 RRAC) fought back
with a goal of its own in the 42nd minute when Raul Borges tapped
in a rebound to tie the score at 1-1. Corey Whitmire picked up the
assist as he sent the shot on goal.
In the 73rd minute, Avelar struck a header
over the Knight goalkeeper on a pass from Gallardo to put the Rams
ahead for good, 2-1.
The victory moves Texas Wesleyan into second
place in the Red River Conference with two games remaining.
Texas Wesleyan returns to action Saturday
when they host conference-foe UT-Permian Basin at 3 p.m.
