FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior David Johnson's
12 points and nine rebounds weren't enoughas Texas Wesleyan fell
to Dillard, 70-53, Saturday evening at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
Texas Wesleyan (0-2) shot a dismal 30 percent
(19-64) from the field and 47 percent (14-30) from the charity stripe.
In the first half, the Rams opened the
game on a 15-6 run, capped off by a jumper by junior Jaison Frazier
at the 15:15 mark.
Dillard (6-0) fought back with a streak
of its own. The Blue Devils went a 22-6 run over the next 11 minutes
to take a 28-21 lead with 4:12 to play in the first half. Jamaal
Jones led the way with four treys.
Texas Wesleyan closed the gap in the final
four minutes on the strength of two lay-ups by juniors Joey Gladney
and Albert Talley, and two free throws by sophomore Brad Schilder.
The Rams went into the half down only three, 30-27.
In the second half, Dillard pushed the
lead to 10, at 48-38, with 11:28 to play in the game, as Jones poured
in six more points.
The Rams would cut the deficit to four,
at 52-48, with 6:47 to play with Gladney leading the way with four
points.
However, that is as close as Texas Wesleyan
would get, as Dillard closed out the game on an 18-5 run, which
included two more treys by Jones.
Jones led the Blue Devils with 24 points,
shooting 7-of-14 from the field, including 6-of-9 from behind the
arc. Dillard had three more players score in double figures. Eric
Bell and Alfredo Ott both chipped in 11 points, while Ivory Clark
added 10 points.
Fraizer had a double-double for the Rams,
tallying 10 points and 10 rebounds. Gladney finished the evening
with 11 points and six rebounds. Schilder led the Rams with three
assists.
The Rams will be back in action Tuesday
when they host St. Gregory's at 7:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson
