HOUSTON, Texas - The Texas
Wesleyan volleyball team defeated UT-Permian Basin in the quarterfinals,
26-30, 30-17, 30-17, 30-24, but fell to Lubbock Christian in the
semifinals, 30-28, 31-29, 30-20, at the Region VI Tournament hosted
by Houston Baptist, on Friday.
Texas Wesleyan (29-6) lost the first game
against UT-Permian Basin but fought back and won the next three
games easily.
"The girls showed great resiliency
after losing the first game," head coach Rick Johansen said.
"The girls stepped it up and never looked back as they cruised
to a victory over UT-Permian Basin."
Sophomore Rachel Loftin led the Lady Rams
with 16 kills and six blocks. Junior Cortney Johansen dished out
44 assists and had six digs. Junior Kat Williams had 16 digs and
five aces, while junior Tiffany Porterfield tallied 11 kills and
four blocks.
Against Lubbock Christian, Texas Wesleyan
barely lost the first two games. They would eventually lose game
three as well.
"After losing the first two games
as close as we did, it was hard to come back," Johansen said.
"It took the wind out of our sails and we couldn't recover."
Porterfield led the Lady Rams with 13 kills,
while sophomore Susan Taylor picked up 21 digs. Sophomore Allyson
Gaudi also had 12 digs, as Williams tallied 17 digs and 10 kills.
Johansen led the Lady Rams with 36 assists.
With the season likely over, the Lady Rams
finish the year 29-6.
