STERLING, Kan. - Sophomore
Jaison Fraizer hit 14-of-15 free throws in the second half on his
way to 34 points to lead Texas Wesleyan over Sterling College, 81-76,
Saturday evening at the Pizza Hut Warrior Classic.
Fraiser connected on 8-of-11 shots from
the field and 18-of-20 from the charity stripe. The Yonkers, N.Y.,
native, also had three assists and one steal to lead the Rams to
their third straight victory.
"Jaison stepped up and played a gutsy
game for us tonight," head coach Terry Waldrop said. "He
is a very versatile player who plays several positions for us. He
came up big when we needed him to."
Sterling (0-5) opened the game on a 16-10
scoring run, on the strength of seven points by Patrick Johnson.
The Rams had already turned the ball over five times at 8:48 mark.
Texas Wesleyan (3-2) fought back with a
14-9 run to close the gap to one, 25-24, with 49 seconds to go in
the first half.
A trey by Michael Moncreif and a layup
by Chris Schneider, to close out the first half, gave the Warriors
a six-point lead at the break.
In the second half, Sterling pushed its
lead to nine, 44-35, when Jeremy Lucas nailed a three-pointer at
the 16:03 mark.
The Rams then rallied off nine straight
points behind some hot shooting to tie the game, 44-44, with 13:28
left in the game. The Rams shot 60 percent (18-30) from the field
in the second half.
Texas Wesleyan increased its lead to 10
at the 3:56 mark. Sophomore Brad Schilder had eight points, while
Fraizer added five points to make it 66-56.
Down the stretch, Sterling would make some
big shots, but Fraizer countered by making 11-of-12 free throws
in the last two minutes.
Texas Wesleyan shot 48 percent (28-59)
from the floor and 29 percent (4-14) from behind the arc. The Rams
also shot a season-high 72 percent (21-29) from the free-throw line.
Sterling countered by shooting 50 percent
(26-52) from the floor and 50 percent (8-16) from three-point land.
The Warriors also shot 62 percent (16-26) from the charity stripe.
The Rams will be back in action Monday,
when they travel to St. Gregory's at 8 p.m. Texas Wesleyan defeated
the Cavaliers, 91-70, on Nov. 18, in Fort Worth.
