LAREDO, Texas - Four Rams
finished with four players in double figures as Texas Wesleyan defeated
Texas A&M-International, 82-69, Saturday evening in Red River
Athletic Conference action.
Junior Joey Gladney had 18 points to lead
the Rams, with senior David Johnson adding 17 points and five blocks.
Sophomore Brad Schilder tallied 16 points and seven assists, while
sophomore Jaison Frazier had 13 points and six rebounds to lead
a balanced Ram-attack.
"We played our best game of the year
tonight," head coach Terry Waldrop said. "It was a solid
overall performance by everyone. We shot he ball well and played
good team defense."
Texas Wesleyan (4-3, 1-0 RRAC) jumped to
an eight-point lead at the half, 45-37, on the strength of 14 first-half
points from Gladney and 11 points from Schilder.
In the second half, Johnson and Fraizer
took over as both players shot lights out from the field. Both Rams
went 4-of-4 from the field as they outscored the Dustdevils (1-5,
0-2 RRAC), 37-32 to garner the victory in the conference-opener.
"They played a zone the entire night,
so we got a lot of opportunities to get everyone involved,"
Waldrop said. "Anytime you win by double-digits on the road
in this conference, that is saying something."
Texas Wesleyan shot 55 percent (29-53)
from the field and a season-high 80 percent (16-20) from the charity
stripe. The Rams also shot 40 percent (8-20) from behind the arc.
Texas A&M-International was held to
36 percent (27-76) from the field and 50 percent (7-14) from the
free-throw line. The Dustdevils also only shot 44 percent (8-18)
from three-point land.
The Rams outrebounded the Dustdevils, 40-38
and also had 21 assists, led by Anthony Martin's eight assists.
The Rams will be back in action Monday,
when they travel to take on conference-rival Houston Baptist. Tip-off
is set for 7:30 p.m.
