Lady Rams pull away late, defeat UT-Permian Basin, 72-64
December 6, 2003

     FORT WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Shawndrika Courtney, fresh off her conference player of the week award, scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Texas Wesleyan past conference-foe UT-Permian Basin, 72-64, Saturday evening at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.

     Down eight points with over 11 minutes remaining the game, the Lady Rams finished on a 26-10 run to close out the game.

     Texas Wesleyan (5-4, 2-1 RRAC) opened the game on a 10-2 run, keyed by four points from sophomore Stephanie Reder. The Lady Rams also had five steals during the stretch.

     UT-Permian Basin (0-9, 0-5 RRAC) fought back with a 31-14 run to take a 33-28 lead at the 4:36 mark of the first half. The Lady Falcons received 11 points from Jessica Hearn and 10 points from Teresa Jourdan.

     The Lady Rams closed the gap to three points at the half, on the strength of four points each from junior Kashae Townsend and freshman Shamona Hollingsworth.

     In the second half, UT-Permian Basin increased its lead to 10, opening with a 12-5 run in the first five minutes. The run was keyed by four free throws by Codye Pittmann.

     Senior Ashley Walker's layup at the 6:46 mark capped off a, 18-6 run, to give the Lady Rams their first lead since early in the first half. Hollingsworth keyed the run with five points.

     The Lady Rams closed out the game on a 17-9.

     Junior Kashae Townsend finished the evening with a double-double, tallying 11 points and 10 rebounds. Walker chipped in with 11 points of her own and nine rebounds.

     Hearn led the way for the Lady Falcons with 20 points, while Jourdan chipped in 14 points.

     Texas Wesleyan shot 47 percent (24-51) from the field. The Lady Rams continued to struggle at the free-throw line, shooting 56 percent (24-43).

     UT-Permian Basin shot a dismal 29 percent from the floor and 19 percent (5-26) from behind the arc. The Lady Falcons also shot 74 percent (25-34) from the charity stripe.

     Texas Wesleyan returns to action Saturday when they host conference-foe SW Assemblies of God at 5:30 p.m. The game can be heard live at www.ramsports.net.
