FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior
Wesley Haynes had 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists to lead
Texas Wesleyan over Red River conference-foe Paul Quinn, 85-68,
Monday evening at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
Down by one, with 18:51 remaining in the
game, the Rams ended the game with a 46-28 run down the stretch
to pick up their fifth-straight conference victory.
"It was a hard-fought victory,"
head coach Terry Waldrop said. "Our players stepped up and
made the plays needed to distance ourselves from the other team.
No game is easy in this conference because there is a lot of parity.
It is still a wide-open race."
Haynes also registered one block, two steals
and fast-break dunk over a Tiger defender that sent the crowd into
a frenzy. The Hammond, La. native, has scored in double figures
in eight straight games.
Texas Wesleyan (10-7, 6-1 RRAC) built a
17-7 lead at the 14:22 mark of the first half. Junior Joey Gladney
and sophomore Brad Schilder led the charge with five points each.
Paul Quinn (3-14, 2-5 RRAC) fought back
with a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to take a two-point lead
with 10:36 remaining in the first half.
The Rams pushed the lead back to 10, at
the 5:07 mark on a three-point play by Schilder to make it 35-25.
The Tigers ended the first half on an 11-4
run sparked by Aswad McLane who had seven points during the stretch.
In the second half, the Rams busted open
the game shooting 58 percent (18-31) from the floor and draining
5-of-10 three pointers. Gladney led all scorers in the second half
with 14 points.
"Joey and Wesley were both very effective
for us tonight," Waldrop said. "We got into foul trouble
early and they bailed us out."
The Rams outrebounded Paul Quinn, 39-33
and forced the Tigers into 20 turnovers.
"We have been doing a tremendous job
defensively," Waldrop said. "It has been consistent all
season and a key to our success."
Texas Wesleyan shot 54 percent (35-65)
from the floor and 50 percent (7-14) from the charity stripe. The
Rams also shot 33 percent (8-24) from the three-point line.
The Rams held Paul Quinn to 36 percent
shooting (21-58) from the field and 33 percent (4-12) shooting from
behind the arc. The Tigers did however shoot 85 percent (22-26)
from the free-throw line.
Leading the way for Paul Quinn was Jeremy
Haynes who totaled 22 points.
The Rams will be back in action Saturday
at 7:30 p.m., when they travel to take on conference-rival Bacone
College in Muskogee, Okla.
