FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior
Ashley Walker had 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead Texas Wesleyan
over Red River conference-foe Paul Quinn, 93-61, Monday evening
at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
Texas Wesleyan (10-4, 6-1 RRAC) took a
four-point halftime lead and blew open the game, doubling up the
Lady Tigers, 56-28 in the second half. The Lady Rams played some
inspiring defense holding the opposition to only 19 percent shooting
(8-42) in the second half. The victory gives Texas Wesleyan its
fifth straight conference victory and sixth straight victory overall.
The Lady Rams opened up a nine-point lead
at the 13:36 mark of the first half. Sophomore Shawndrika Courtney
posted eight points during the stretch to make the score, 18-9.
Paul Quinn cut the lead to four at the
half on the strength of 13 first-half points by Andrea Anderson.
In the second half, the Lady Ram offense
also picked up the pace shooting 57 percent (21-37) from the floor.
Walker and junior Kashae Townsend scored 13 and 12 points respectively
in the second half.
Texas Wesleyan shot 53 percent (36-68)
from the field and 27 percent (3-11) from behind the arc. The Lady
Rams however, continued to struggle at the free-throw line, making
only 55 percent (18-33).
Paul Quinn shot a dismal 25 percent (20-80)
from the floor and 18 percent (6-34) from behind the arc. The Lady
Tigers also shot 68 percent (15-22) from the free-throw line.
Courtney led all scorers with 24 points and also
pulled down six rebounds. Townsend finished with 14 points and nine
rebounds, while freshman Stephanie Sewell tallied nine points, five
assists and two steals for the Lady Rams.
Jasmine Dowden led Paul Quinn with 17 points
and Kasei Bert pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
The Lady Rams will be back in action Thursday
at 6 p.m., when they host conference-rival Bacone College at the
Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
