FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior
David Johnson was named men's basketball co-player of the week by
the Red River Athletic Conference, along with Ricky Bennett of Houston
Baptist University for their performances during the span of January
4-10. Junior Kashae Townsend finished in a three-way tie for the
RRAC women's basketball honor with Jessica Hearn of UT-Permian Basin
and Elinor Smith of Houston Baptist.
Johnson, a 6-10 forward from Los Angeles,
recorded a double-double as the Rams won their only game of the
week, 76-74, over Texas College. Johnson posted 21 points, 12 rebounds,
three assists and four blocks. He was 9-of-20 shooting from the
field and 3-of-5 on free throw attempts. He has scored in double
figures in 13-of-16. Johnson leads the nation in blocks averaging
3.9 blocks per game this season.
Townsend, a 5-11 sophomore from Hillsboro,
Texas, accounted for 20 points and 18 rebounds in her only outing
of the week, a 66-41 victory over Texas College. Townsend also chipped
in five assists, three blocked shots and a pair of steals in the
win. She was 7-of-17 from the field and connected on her only three-point
attempt of the game. She is averaging 11.0 points and 9.7 rebounds
per game on the season and has posted double-digits rebound totals
in eight of 13 games.
The Lady Rams will be back in action Thursday,
when they host Rhema Bible at 6 p.m. Both squads will travel to
take on conference-foe Bacone College Saturday. The women's team
tips-off at 5:30 p.m., with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.
