MUSKOGEE, Okla. - Junior Kashae
Townsend posted 12 points and nine rebounds to lead Texas Wesleyan
past Bacone College, 65-50, Saturday evening in Red River conference
play.
Five of Townsend's nine rebounds were offensive.
The Hillsboro, Texas native, also had three steals and three assists
in 33 minutes of play.
Bacone College (2-15, 0-7 RRAC) took an
early two-point lead on a three-pointer by Kelly Quillmann at the
11:35 mark of the first half. The Lady Warriors then turned the
ball over three straight possessions.
Texas Wesleyan (11-4, 7-1 RRAC) roared
back with a 15-2 run over the next five minutes sparked by six points
from junior Shayla Coleman and five points by junior Johnna Flemmons.
The Lady Warriors cut the lead to six with
1:42 remaining in the half on the strength of four points from Angie
Massengale.
The Lady Rams pushed the lead to 10 with
two free throws by Townsend and a jumper by sophomore Kori Yates.
The Achilles Heel for Bacone in the first
half was ball-control, as it turned the ball over 12 times.
In the second half, the Lady Rams kept
the pressure, as Bacone could only get as close as nine points.
Texas Wesleyan increased its lead to 15 points canning crucial free
throws down the stretch.
Texas Wesleyan shot 36 percent (23-64)
from the floor and 28 percent (5-18) from behind the arc. The Lady
Rams also shot 61 percent (14-23) from the free-throw line.
Bacone College shot 32 percent (17-53)
from the field and 17 percent (4-23) from the three-point line.
The Lady Warriors also shot 60 percent (12-20) from the charity
stripe.
The Lady Warriors also turned the ball
over 20 times compared to only 10 by the Lady Rams.
The Lady Rams will be back in action Monday
at 5:30 p.m., when they travel to take on conference-rival Langston.
