LANGSTON, Okla. - Junior Joey
Gladney's 20 points and 12 rebounds were not enough as Langston
defeated Texas Wesleyan, 82-73, Monday evening in Red River conference
play.
Texas Wesleyan (10-9, 6-3 RRAC) jumped
out to a 9-5 lead at the 15:52 mark of the first half. Junior Joey
Gladney led the way with five points.
Langston (11-6, 7-4 RRAC) fought back with
an 11-2 run over the next two minutes, led by Jimmy Mackey, who
tallied eight points during the stretch.
The Lions increased their lead to, 45-27
at halftime with some timely shooting. Langston shot 56 percent
(10-18) from behind the arc in the first half. Skip Jackson led
the way, making 5-of-6 from downtown.
In the second half, Langston increased
its lead to 66-42, at the 10:55 mark.
Texas Wesleyan cut the lead all the way
down to eight with 17 seconds remaining. The Rams received some
inspiring play from their bench. Freshman Aaron Smith scored 11
points while junior Brian Harston chipped in with four points and
two offensive rebounds.
Texas Wesleyan shot 32 percent (26-81)
from the field and 58 percent (15-26) from the charity stripe. The
Rams also shot 32 percent (6-19) from behind the arc.
Langston shot 50 percent (26-52) from the
floor and 62 percent (18-29) from the free-throw line. The Lions
also shot 50 percent (12-24) from the three-point line.
The Rams outrebounded Langston, 50-42,
and forced the Lions into 21 turnovers, but they continued to make
their shots.
Junior Anthony Martin had a career-high
16 points and dished out seven assists. Senior Wesley Haynes posted
12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
The Rams will be back in action Saturday
at 7:30 p.m., when they host conference-rival Texas A&M-International
at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
