Senior Wesley Haynes scored 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Texas Wesleyan
past Texas A&M-International, 75-65, Saturday evening in Red River Conference
action. Down by four points at halftime,
Texas Wesleyan (11-9, 7-3 RRAC) outscored the Dustdevils, 43-29 in the second
half to stay tied for second place in conference-play with Jarvis Christian.
TAMU-International (6-14, 5-8 RRAC) turned the
ball over 18 times and failed to score in the last two minutes of the game. They
were outrebounded by the Rams, 50-35.
The
Dustdevils jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the 17:29 mark of the first half. Keith
Simpson led the way with four points.
The
Rams went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-7 lead with 13:37 left in the half. Freshman
Aaron Smith's three-pointer gave Texas Wesleyan the lead.
TAMU-International
fought back and took a 26-17 lead at the 7:50 mark. Hector Garza nailed three
treys during the stretch.
Texas Wesleyan
was able to cut the lead to four at the break on the strength eight points from
junior Joey Gladney and six points from Haynes.
In
the second half, senior David Johnson's dunk at the 13:46 mark put the Rams ahead
for good at 44-43.
Simpson's free throw at
the 2:10 mark of the second half cut the Ram lead to two points, but that would
be the last points the Dustdevils would score. Texas A&M-International turned
the ball over twice and misfired on two treys.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 35 percent (24-68) from the field and a season-high 83 percent (25-30)
from the charity stripe. The Rams only shot nine percent (2-22) from behind the
arc.
TAMU-International shot 39 percent (22-57)
from the floor and 73 percent (16-22) from the free-throw line. The Dustdevils
also shot 29 percent (5-17) from the three-point line.
The
Rams outrebounded TAMU-International, 50-35.
Gladney
tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Johnson finished with 12 points, seven
boards and three blocks.
Garza led all Dustdevil
scorers with 18 points, while Larry White dished out four assists.
The
Rams will be back in action on Monday at 7:30 p.m., when they host conference-leader
Houston Baptist at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium. The Huskies are ranked 13th in
the nation.
