Senior Ashley Walker posted a season-high 25 points and 14 rebounds but that
was not enough as Texas Wesleyan fell to Texas A&M-International, 72-69, Saturday
evening in Red River Conference play. Texas
Wesleyan (11-6, 7-3 RRAC) turned the ball over 25 times and shot only 37 percent
(25-67) from the floor as they lost for the second time in as many games.
TAMU-International (8-14, 7-5 RRAC) registered
15 steals as it won its seventh victory in a row. Texas Wesleyan jumped to
an early 6-0 lead with 18:48 remaining in the first half. Walker led the way scoring
four points.
The Lady Rams held steady taking
a 16-11 lead at the 13:24 mark. Sophomore Shawndrika Courtney led the way with
five points during the stretch.
TAMU-International
fought back outscoring the Lady Rams, 26-16 down the stretch in the first half.
Jermina Tomlinson led the way for the Lady Dustdevils, scoring nine points in
the first half.
The Dustdevils increased
their lead to 10, at 64-54 with 3:51 remaining.
Freshman
Stephanie Sewell's three-pointer with three seconds left in the game would be
as close as the Rams would come.
Texas Wesleyan
shot 37 percent (25-67) from the field and 69 percent (18-26) from the free-throw
line. The Lady Rams also shot 10 percent (1-10) from behind the arc.
Texas
A&M-International shot 41 percent (26-64) from the floor and 63 percent (15-24)
from the charity stripe. The Lady Dustdevils also shot 26 percent (5-19) from
the three-point line.
Courtney finished with
18 points and eight rebounds, while Sewell dished out a team-high four assists.
Junior Kashae Townsend tallied seven rebounds and three steals.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Monday when they host conference-leader Houston
Baptist at 5:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium. The Lady Huskies are ranked
sixth in the nation.
