Lady Rams fall to #6 Houston Baptist, 76-59
January 26, 2004

     FORT WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Shawndrika Courtney's 15 points, nine rebounds and five steals were not enough as Texas Wesleyan fell to No. 6 Houston Baptist, 76-59, Monday evening in Red River Conference play.

     Texas Wesleyan (11-7, 7-4 RRAC) turned the ball over 28 times, while Houston Baptist (17-3, 12-0 RRAC) picked up 20 steals.

     Houston Baptist (17-3, 12-0 RRAC) jumped out to an early 12-5 lead at the 14:39 mark. The Lady Huskies put the pressure on as Texas Wesleyan committed 11 turnovers in the first five minutes. Texas Wesleyan cut the lead to three at 17-14, with 10:26 left in the first half. The Lady Rams only turned the ball over one time during that span and forced Houston Baptist into three turnovers.

     The Lady Huskies increased their lead to as many as 12 points, taking a 29-17 lead at the 6:44 mark of the first half.

     The Lady Rams fought back going on a 16-8 run over the final six minutes of the first half. Courtney led the way scoring six points down the stretch.

     In the second half, Houston Baptist stretched its lead to 12 at 46-34, in the first four minutes. The Lady Huskies controlled the rest of the game as Texas Wesleyan only shot 34 percent (11-32) from the field in the second half.

     Houston Baptist outrebounded the Lady Rams, 45-36, and received 19 points from its bench.

     Texas Wesleyan shot 39 percent (22-56) from the floor and 38 percent (3-8) from the behind the three-point line. The Lady Rams also shot 55 percent (11-20) from the charity stripe.

     Houston Baptist shot 41 percent (28-68) from the field and 15 percent (3-20) from behind the arc. The Lady Huskies also shot 85 percent (17-20) from the free-throw line.

     Jere' Adams led the way for the Lady Huskies, scoring 17 points and dishing out eight assists.

     Senior Ashley Walker led the Lady Rams with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

     Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to take on conference-rival Wiley College at 5:30 p.m.
