Texas - Sylvester Simple's layup with six seconds left pushed Wiley College
past Texas Wesleyan, 65-63, Wednesday evening in Red River Conference play.
Down
by two with 14 seconds to go, Texas Wesleyan's David Johnson picked off an errant
Wildcat pass for fast-break dunk to tie the game, 63-63. At the other end, Simple
came up with a loose
ball and nailed the winning shot. Sophomore Brad Schilder's runner at the buzzer
bounced out as the Rams (11-11, 7-5 RRAC) lost for the fourth time in five games.
Johnson
led the way for Texas Wesleyan scoring 26 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.
The Los Angeles, Cailf. native, tallied six dunks, four blocks and four steals.
Wiley
College (5-17, 4-7 RRAC) opened the game on a 6-0 run, as the Rams turned the
ball over twice in the first two minutes.
The
Wildcats increased their lead to 11, at the 7:42 mark of the first half. Ricky
Dixon scored eight points during the stretch to lead the way.
Both
teams would trade baskets the rest of the half, as Wiley took a 33-22 advantage
into the locker room.
The Rams held Wiley
College to 34 percent (11-32) from the field but turnovers plagued them, as they
committed 15. They gave up 21 points off of those turnovers.
In
the second half, Texas Wesleyan outscored the Wildcats, 21-5, in the first eight
minutes to take a 43-38 lead. Johnson scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds
during the run. Wiley College then went
on a run of its own, outscoring Texas Wesleyan 13-4, to take a 51-47 lead with
9:17 remaining in the game.
Both teams held
steady down the stretch until Simple's shot won the game for the Wildcats.
Senior
Wesley Haynes finished the evening with eight points and 11 rebounds, while Schilder
dished out four assists.
Texas Wesleyan
shot 49 percent (25-51) from the floor and 17 percent (2-12) from behind the arc.
The Rams also shot 50 percent (11-22) from the free-throw line.
Wiley
College shot 37 percent (24-65) from the field and 29 percent (6-21) from the
three-point line. The Wildcats also shot 52 percent (11-21) from the charity stripe.
Derrick
Smith totaled 19 points for Wiley College and Simple, the conference's second-leading
scorer, finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday when they travel to take on conference-rival
UT-Permian Basin at 7:30 p.m.
