Texas - Amber Boykins' two free-throws with two seconds remaining led Wiley
College past Texas Wesleyan, 60-59, Wednesday evening in Red River Conference
play.
Texas Wesleyan held a one-point lead
with 14 seconds remaining with sophomore Kori Yates at the free-throw line. Yates
missed both free throws and Wiley drove down the court and drew the foul
to set the stage for Boykins.
Senior
Ashley Walker led Texas Wesleyan with 15 points and eight rebounds. The Bryan,
Texas native, also tallied two steals in 26 minutes of play.
Wiley
College (8-11, 7-5 RRAC) opened the game on a 12-3 run, with Crystal Cray scoring
four points during the stretch.
Texas
Wesleyan (11-8, 7-5 RRAC) went on a run of its own to end the first half, outscoring
the Lady Wildcats, 26-12. Walker led the way for the Lady Rams with seven points
down the stretch.
In the second half, the
Wildcats opened with a 22-8 run, to take a nine-point lead with 11:11 remaining
in the game.
Texas Wesleyan fought back with
a 21-7 run to retake the lead, 58-53, with 2:50 left in the game. Walker had six
points during the stretch.
Sophomore guard
Stephanie Reder finished the evening with 10 points and four rebounds, while freshman
Stephanie Sewell led the Lady Rams with four assists.
The
Lady Rams began the season 7-1 in the Red River Conference, but have lost four
straight games in conference play.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 33 percent (20-61) from the floor and 61 percent (19-31) from the
charity stripe. The Lady Rams also went 0-for-8 from the three-point line.
Wiley
College shot 37 percent (22-59) from the floor and 58 percent (15-26) from the
free-throw line. The Lady Wildcats also shot 20 percent (1-5) from behind the
arc.
Boykins led Wiley College with 15 points,
while Cray finished the night with 12 points and 10 boards.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday when they travel to take on conference-rival
UT-Permian Basin at 5:30 p.m.
