ODESSA, Texas - Senior Ashley
Walker scored 17 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead Texas
Wesleyan past UT-Permian Basin, 76-72, Saturday evening in Red River
conference play.
Texas Wesleyan (12-8, 8-5 RRAC) shot 46
percent from the field and forced the Lady Falcons into 20 turnovers
to snap out of its four-game losing streak.
UT-Permian Basin (4-20, 4-10 RRAC) opened
up with a 14-10 lead at the 13:51 mark of the first half. Codye
Pittman led the way with five points during the run. The Lady Rams
turned the ball over five times during the stretch.
A layup by Shawndrika Courtney with 8:09
left in the first half gave Texas Wesleyan a 26-20 lead. The Lady
Rams outscored the Lady Falcons, 16-6 over the six-minute span.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan took
a 43-35 lead with 17:33 remaining in the game. Sophomore Stephanie
Reder made back-to-back baskets to give the Lady Rams the eight-point
advantage.
Texas Wesleyan increased its lead to as
many as 15 points, when Walker made a free throw to put the Lady
Rams ahead, 62-47, with 8:21 remaining in the game.
The Lady Falcons then made a serious comeback
attempt. UT-Permian Basin outscored Texas Wesleyan, 25-14, down
the stretch in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Lady
Rams hit five free throws in the last minute to seal the victory.
Freshman Nastassia Brown poured in 11 points
and junior Johnna Flemmons added 10 points from the bench. Courtney
led the Lady Rams with 12 rebounds.
Texas Wesleyan shot 66 percent (19-29)
from the free-throw line and 25 percent (3-12) from behind the arc.
UT-Permian Basin shot 43 percent (27-63)
from the floor and 69 percent (11-16) from the charity stripe. The
Lady Falcons also shot 30 percent (7-23) from the three-point line.
The Lady Falcons' Kim Chaffin led all scorers
with 22 points, while Teresa Jourdan added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Rams return to action Tuesday,
when they travel to take on conference-foe Jarvis Christian at 5:30
p.m.
