Rams go cold down the stretch, fall to Jarvis Christian, 73-67

     HAWKINS, Texas - Texas Wesleyan dropped a 73-67 decision to Jarvis Christian Tuesday night in Red River Conference play. The loss is the Rams' fourth straight and six in its last seven games.

     In a losing effort, senior David Johnson totaled 15 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks, while the Rams pulled down 19 offensive rebounds.

     Sophomore Brad Schilder's trey at the 13:30 mark gave Texas Wesleyan (11-13, 7-7 RRAC) a seven-point lead, as it raced to 15-8 advantage. Senior Wesley Haynes led the charge with six points, while Schilder added five points to cause.

     Jarvis Christian (12-8, 10-4 RRAC) fought back with an 18-6 run over the next six minutes to take a 26-21 lead at the 7:22 mark of the first half. Demarion Crite scored five points for the Bulldogs during the stretch.

     The Rams came back with a 17-8 run of their own over the next seven minutes to take a 38-34 lead with 15 seconds remaining in the opening period. Junior Anthony Martin tallied four layups during the run.

     The Bulldogs cut it two points at halftime as Joshua Williams tipped in an errant shot at the buzzer.

     In the second half, a jumper by Tony Wilson at the 16:46 mark gave Jarvis Christian a 43-41 advantage.

     Texas Wesleyan then went on an 8-2 run over the next two minutes to take a 49-45 lead with 14:22 left in the game. Five points from junior Joey Gladney sparked the run.

     Jarvis Christian responded with a 20-10 run over the next eight minutes to retake the lead, 61-57, with 6:14 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs received six points each from Crite and Wilson.

     Texas Wesleyan then went cold, shooting 3-for-14 from the floor the rest of the way. Jarvis Christian went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the last six minutes.

     Along with Johnson, three other Rams finished in double figures for points. Gladney posted 14 points, while Martin and Haynes each added 13 points apiece.

     Texas Wesleyan shot 42 percent (27-65) from the field and 55 percent (11-20) from the charity stripe. The Rams also shot a dismal 11 percent (2-19) from the three-point line.

     Jarvis Christian shot 44 percent (26-59) from the floor and 85 percent (17-20) from the free-throw line. The Bulldogs also shot 57 percent (4-7) from behind the arc.

     Crite led the Bulldogs with 19 points, while Wilson finished with 10 points and 10 boards.

     Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday when they travel to take on conference-rival SW Assemblies of God at 7:30 p.m.
