Texas - Texas Wesleyan turned the ball over 31 times as it lost to conference-rival
Jarvis Christian, 76-69, Tuesday evening at the Anthony Robinson Gymnasium.
Texas
Wesleyan (12-9, 8-6 RRAC) received 20 points from junior Shayla Coleman and 19
points off of the bench from junior Johnna Flemmons in a losing effort.
Jarvis
Christian (11-7, 9-4 RRAC) opened an early 5-0 lead as Jennifer Oko made two layups.
The
Lady Rams answered with a 10-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 10-7 lead
at the 11:29 mark of the first half. Flemmons led the charge with four points
during the stretch.
The Lady Bulldogs fought
back with a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to take an eight-point lead with
8:07 left in the opening period.
Both teams
traded baskets the rest of the half, as Jarvis Christian took a 34-27 lead into
halftime. Ashley Paul's trey at the buzzer gave the Lady Bulldogs their seven-point
lead.
In the second half, Jarvis Christian
increased its lead to as many as 14 points, when LaTasha Hanks layup made it 57-43
with 8:24 remaining in the game.
Texas Wesleyan
would get as close as seven points, but Melina Perea iced the game, making 10-of-12
free throws in the second half. Perea finished the evening with 15 points, while
Oko posted 18 points and four steals.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 54 percent (22-41) from the floor and a season-high 88 percent (21-24)
from the charity stripe. The Lady Rams also shot 50 percent (4-8) from the three-point
line as a team.
Jarvis Christian shot a combined
48 percent (26-54) from the field and 69 percent (20-29) from the free-throw line.
The Lady Bulldogs also shot 29 percent (4-14) from behind the arc.
Texas
Wesleyan outrebounded Jarvis Christian, 30-25, but the Lady Bulldogs scored 33
points off of Lady Ram turnovers.
Texas Wesleyan
will be back in action Saturday when they travel to take on conference-rival SW
Assemblies of God at 5:30 p.m.
