Texas - Senior Wesley Haynes scored 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds
but that was not enough as Texas Wesleyan fell to SW Assemblies of God, 77-68,
Saturday evening at the Schaefer Center.
Texas
Wesleyan (11-14, 7-8 RRAC) turned the ball over 26 times and was outrebounded
by the Lions, 50-34.
The loss is the Rams
fifth straight and seventh in their last eight games.
SW
Assemblies of God (8-14, 7-8 RRAC) opened the game on a 13-9 run, to take a four-point
lead at the 13:42 mark of the first half. Julio Osorio led the way scoring three
points.
The Rams fought back with a 30-12
run over the next 10 minutes to take a 39-25 lead with 2:12 left in the first
half. Senior Brian Harston led the way with eight points during the stretch.
The
Lions received five points from Derek Willis and three free throws from James
Walker to cut the lead to 42-33 at the break.
In
the second half, SW Assemblies of God fought all the way back to take the lead
59-58, with 6:27 remaining the second half. The Lions opened the second frame
on a 26-16 run led by 11 points from Willis and nine points by Josh Daniels.
The
Lions put the game away down the stretch as it made 8-of-10 free throws in the
last two minutes along with two treys.
Harston
led all Ram scorers with 16 points, while sophomore Brad Schilder tallied 15 points,
nailing four treys. Junior Anthony Martin led Texas Wesleyan with four assists.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 38 percent (23-61) from the field and 50 percent (13-26) from the
charity stripe. The Ram also shot 36 percent (9-25) from behind the three-point
line.
SW Assemblies of God shot 36 percent
(19-53) from the floor and 72 percent (33-46) from the free-throw line. The Lions
also shot 26 percent (6-23) from behind the arc.
Willis
led the Lions with 26 points and tallied nine rebounds. Daniels posted 22 points
and seven rebounds. Osorio led SW Assemblies of God with 10 rebounds.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Monday when they travel to take on conference-rival
Huston-Tillotson at 7:30 p.m.
