Texas - Junior LaRhonda Hunter scored 20 points to lead Texas Wesleyan past
SW Assemblies of God, 72-63, Saturday evening at the Schaeffer Center.
Texas
Wesleyan (13-9, 9-6 RRAC) put constant pressure on SW Assemblies of God, forcing
the Lady Lions into 27 turnovers and tallying 17 steals. The Lady Rams also only
turned the ball over a season-low
seven times.
SW Assemblies of God (4-18,
3-12 RRAC) opened the game on a 12-5 run, to take a seven-point lead at the 14:53
mark of the first half. Katie Stevens led the way scoring six points during the
span.
The Lady Rams fought back as junior
Shayla Coleman's bucket at the 4:29 mark gave Texas Wesleyan a two-point lead.
Sophomore Kori Yates nailed two treys during the 15-6 run.
The
Lady Lions used a 10-5 run to close out the half to take a 28-25 lead into the
break.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan
opened with a 14-5 run as Hunter rallied off six points. The Lady Rams were in
control with a 37-32 lead with 16:40 left in the game.
The
Lady Lions cut the lead to 61-59 with 3:06 remaining in the game, but the Lady
Rams ended the game making 7-of-11 free throws to ice the game.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 36 percent (28-78) and 59 percent (10-17) from the charity stripe.
The Lady Rams also shot 32 percent (6-19) from behind the arc.
SW
Assemblies of God shot 42 percent (17-41) and 76 percent (28-37) from behind the
free-throw line. The Lady Lions also shot 33 percent (1-3) from the three-point
arc.
Coleman tallied 12 points and four steals.
The San Antonio, Texas native, also led the team with three assists. Freshman
Stephanie Sewell also posted four steals.
Jennifer
Snow led the Lady Lions with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Amanda Hores
tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Monday when they travel to take on conference-rival
Huston-Tillotson at 5:30 p.m.
