Wesleyan outlasts Huston-Tillotson, 64-61 in OT
February 9, 2004

AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Shawndrika Courtney tallied 15 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks to lead Texas Wesleyan past Huston-Tillotson, 64-61, in overtime at Branch Gymnasium.

With 50 seconds remaining in regulation, junior Johnna Flemmons nailed a trey to tie the game 56-56.

In the extra period, Courtney took over posting a layup and three free throws to put the game away for Texas Wesleyan. Amanda Nunez' three-pointer at the buzzer fell short as the Lady Rams won their second conference game in a row.

Texas Wesleyan (14-9, 10-6 RRAC) opened on a 12-6 run to take a six-point lead at the 10:53 mark of the first half. Courtney and senior Ashley Walker both scored four points during the stretch.

Huston-Tillotson (10-12, 10-6 RRAC) fought back, closing the half out on a 29-10 run that gave them a 13-point lead at the break. They received eight points from Felisha Drake during the stretch.

In the second half, Texas Wesleyan came out on a 28-14 run to take the lead on a layup by Walker at the 5:32 mark. The Bryan, Texas native, scored 11 points during the span. At one point, Walker scored seven straight points for the Lady Rams.

A three-point basket by Tillotson's Kyneta Coleman put the home team back up by two with 5:22 to play at 52-50.

A free throw by Drake at the 3:34 mark put Huston-Tillotson up 53-52, but Texas Wesleyan's Shayla Coleman hit a free-throw of her own with 1:54 left in the game.

Tillotson's Coleman struck again, nailing another trey with 1:41 left in the game. That set the stage for Flemmons.

Walker led Texas Wesleyan with 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, while Flemmons chipped in with nine points and a season-high nine rebounds. Junior LaRhonda Hunter led the Lady Rams with four assists.

Texas Wesleyan shot 32 percent (21-66) from the floor and 64 percent (21-33) from the charity stripe. The Lady Rams also shot 14 percent (1-7) from the three-point line.

Huston-Tillotson shot 30 percent (20-66) from the field and 61 percent (14-23) from the free-throw line. The Lady Rams also shot 32 percent (7-22) from behind the arc.

Texas Wesleyan outrebounded Huston-Tillotson, 65-37, with 25 coming on the offensive glass. Huston-Tillotson also committed 23 turnovers.

Coleman led Huston-Tillotson with 21 points and five rebounds, while Drake finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday when they host conference-rival Jarvis Christian at 5:30 p.m., at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
