ADA, Okla. - The Texas Wesleyan
baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader against East Central
Oklahoma, 2-0 and 7-1, Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field.
In game one, Texas Wesleyan (0-7)
received a great pitching performance from junior David Hinson.
The Fort Worth, Texas native, allowed only one hit, while striking
out five in six innings of
work. However, the pitching performance was wasted, as the Rams
couldn't push a single run across on six hits. Designated hitter
Travis Clifford led the Rams going 2-for-3.
"David was throwing strikes and
getting ahead of the batters," head coach Mike Jeffcoat said.
"We just weren't able to back him up today."
East Central Oklahoma (6-3) scored
its first run in the third inning as Pat Gay drew a one-out walk,
advanced to third on a C. Copeland single to right and scored on
a wild pitch by Hinson.
The Tigers capped off the scoring
in the fourth inning as K. Wilkett scored on a RBI-groundout by
B. Hurst.
Hinson (0-1) picked up the loss for
the Rams. J. McCullar (1-0) registered the victory for the Tigers
allowing six hits and striking out three batters in six innings
of work.
In game two, Texas Wesleyan tallied
six hits but left 10 runners on base. The Tigers scored seven runs
on 11 hits and turned two double plays.
In the third inning, East Central
scored three runs off of Ram starting pitcher Chris Bayuk. Matt
Brooks and Wilkett both had a RBI and the Tigers scored an unearned
run.
In the fourth inning, the Tigers added
on four more runs off of Ram relievers, Michael Talley and Chad
Martin. The Tigers received RBI-singles from Brooks, Wilkett and
Tim Fatheree. Jeremy Roy added a sacrifice fly to cap off the scoring.
Texas Wesleyan scored its lone run
in the fifth inning as Clifford drove in centerfielder Mark Smajstrla.
Bayuk (0-1) picked up the loss for
the Rams allowing three runs, one of which was earned, on five hits
while striking out one batter in three innings. Noah Willard (1-0)
picked up the victory for the Tigers, allowing one run on four hits
in five innings of work.
"We are not gettng timely hits,"
Jeffcoat said. "We feel like we have a better hitting team
than last season, we just haven't put it together just yet."
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action
Saturday when they travel to take on UT-Dallas for a doubleheader
beginning at 1 p.m.
