WORTH, Texas - Sterling College scored nine runs in the final three innings,
erasing an early Ram lead to defeat Texas Wesleyan, 12-4, Friday afternoon at
LaGrave Field.
The Rams held an early 4-1
lead, but the Warriors stormed back pounding out 10 hits in the final three innings.
Sterling
College (8-3) opened the scoring in the first inning when centerfielder T.J. Bass
scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Joe Schott to take an early 1-0 lead.
Texas
Wesleyan (1-9) battled back, scoring three runs in the second inning. Junior Nathan
Murrell singled in two runs and junior Anthony Bolivar singled in a run of his
own.
The Rams added another run in the third
inning, when sophomore Matt Putman singled off of Sterling starting pitcher Travis
Ring.
The Warriors cut the Ram lead to 4-3
in the fifth inning, when they pushed across two runs. Rightfielder Engel Palanco
double in two runs off of Ram starting pitcher Shea Harrison.
Then
the Warriors went to work. They scored four runs off of four hits in the seventh
inning and five runs off of six hits in the ninth inning to put the game out of
reach.
Harrison (1-1) suffered the loss for
the Rams as he allowed seven runs on nine hits, while walking one and striking
out four batters in seven innings of work.
Ring
(1-0) picked up the victory allowing four runs off of five hits, while walking
three and striking out one batter in six innings of work.
Senior
Eric Vaughn and Derek Armstrong both went 2-for-4 for the Rams, while Murrell
knocked in two runs. Putman and Bolivar also had an RBI each.
Polanco
led the Warriors going 3-for-4 with four RBI's, while Kody Dewees went 2-for-5
with a home run and three RBI's.
Texas Wesleyan
will be back in action Saturday when they wrap up its series with Serling College
with a doubleheader at LaGrave Field. First-pitch is set for 12 p.m.
