FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior
Wesley Haynes scored 29 points and had five steals on Senior Night,
but that wasn't enough as Texas Wesleyan fell to Langston, 87-80,
Monday evening in Red River Conference play.
Langston (19-9, 15-7 RRAC) opened the game
on a 31-21 run, to take a 10-point lead at the 5:57 mark of the
first half. The Lions received eight points each from Skip Jackson
and Roy Henderson.
Texas Wesleyan (14-18, 10-12 RRAC) answered
with a 15-3 run over the next three minutes to take a 36-34 lead
with 2:17 remaining in the opening period. Haynes scored nine points
during the stretch and the Rams forced Langston in to five turnovers.
In the second half, Henderson's layup at
the 14:36 mark gave Langston a 54-41 lead. The Rams cut the lead
to four, outscoring the Lions 20-11 over the next eight minutes,
but that is as close as Texas Wesleyan would get as Jackson scored
seven points down the stretch.
Langston outrebounded Texas Wesleyan, 58-33.
Texas Wesleyan shot 35 percent (24-69)
from the floor and turned the ball over 15 times.
Quentin Beaty scored 18 points and pulled
down a game-high 17 rebounds, while Jackson finished with 17 points
and a game-high eight assists.
Senior David Johnson scored 20 points,
posted eight rebounds and blocked six shots, while junior Joey Gladney
had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Brian
Harston scored six points in his final appearance at the Sid.
Texas Wesleyan shot 67 percent (26-39)
from the charity stripe and 30 percent (6-20) from behind the arc.
Langston shot 42 percent (27-64) from the
field and 70 percent (26-37) from the free-throw line. The Lions
also shot 35 percent (7-20) from the three-point line.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday,
when they travel to take on #1 seed Houston Baptist in the first
round of the Red River Conference tournament. Tip-off is set for
7:30 p.m.
