Lady Rams defeat Langston, garner second place in RRAC
March 1, 2004

FORT WORTH, Texas - Junior Johnna Flemmons posted 10 points and had four steals as Texas Wesleyan defeated Langston, 60-58, Monday evening at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.

The victory gives Texas Wesleyan second place in conference, barely nosing out Langston by a game.

Langston's Natosha Rouse's driving layup with two seconds remaining rolled off of the rim and in to freshman Nastassia Brown's hands to seal the victory for the Lady Rams.

Langston (15-14, 15-7 RRAC) jumped out to an early 12-3 lead at the 15:19 mark of the first half. The Lady Lions received eight points from Cynthia Hogg and three points from Rouse.

Texas Wesleyan (20-9, 16-6 RRAC) fought back, outscoring the Lady Lions 31-18 the rest of the first half to take a 34-30 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Lady Rams came out smoking, outscoring Langston, 16-6 in the first 13 minutes of play, on the strength of five points from junior Kashae Townsend and four points from senior Ashley Walker. Texas Wesleyan held a 50-36 advantage with 7:03 remaining in the game.

The Lady Lions fought back going on a 20-8 run in the last seven minutes to cut the lead to two at 58-56, with 19 seconds remaining in the game. Sophomore Stephanie Reder then canned two big free throws with 17 seconds left. Rouse hit a jumper to cut the Lady Ram lead to 60-58. After a missed free throw by Townsend, that set the stage for Langston's desperation shot at the buzzer.

Reder chipped in with 11 points, while senior Ashley Walker posted eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Nastassia Brown also picked up three steals for the Lady Rams.

Texas Wesleyan shot 36 percent (21-59) from the floor and 65 percent (11-17) from the free-throw line. The Lady Rams also shot 47 percent (7-15) from the three-point line.

Langston shot 34 percent (22-64) from the field and 61 percent (11-18) from the charity stripe. The Lady Lions also shot 33 percent (3-9) from behind the arc.

Texas Wesleyan forced the Lady Lions in to 26 turnovers.

The Lady Rams will be back in action Thursday, when they host UT-Permian Basin in the first round of the Red River Conference tournament. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
