PINEHURST, N.C. - The Texas Wesleyan
golf team opened its spring schedule on Monday, competing in the
Pfeiffer/Pine Needles Invitational. The Rams finished the tournament
tied for fifth
place.
After ending the first round tied for eighth,
Texas Wesleyan (298-293=591) shot the third-best round of the day
on Tuesday. They finished tied with Guilford College and Lee University.
They finished 11 shots behind the winner. Barry University (292-288=580)
moved from fifth place all the way to first after day one.
Sophomore Reino Deetlefs who finished tied
for sixth led the Rams. The Randburg, South Africa native, fired
an opening-round 74, and followed it up with a 1-under par 71 on
Tuesday. The score of 70 was the third-best score of the day.
Also leading the way was freshman Scott
Sikes (74-71=145). The Irving, Texas native, has already finished
in the Top-10 in all five of his events this season.
"Reino and Scott have been two of
our most consistent players all season," head coach Kevin Millikan
said. "This was a difficult tournament for us because we couldn't
play a practice round. They settled down after the first round and
became more comfortable with the course."
Also competing for the Rams were, freshmen
Dan Hahn (76-76=152) and Justin Ward (74-78=152), along with senior
Ryan Craig (79-76=155). Hahn and Ward finished tied for 48th, while
Craig finished tied for 65th.
"This was only our first tournament
this spring, so we are still getting rid of the rust," Millikan
said. "We should get better each tournament."
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Monday,
when they travel to take part in the Jet Classic at Reflection Ridge
G.C. The two-day event will take place in Wichita, Kan.
