FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas
Wesleyan softball team shutout Lake Erie College in both games of
a doubleheader by run-rule Saturday afternoon at Sycamore Park.
Texas Wesleyan (8-5) won the first by the
score of 8-0, and took the second game also by the score
of 8-0. Lake Erie (0-2) could only manage a total of four hits in
both games on the strength of good pitching performances from Texas
Wesleyan.
In game one, freshman Maria Morones (2-3)
pitched her first career no-hitter allowing only a hit baseman in
six innings of work while striking out three.
"I was a little nervous at first,"
Morones said. "I calmed down after the first inning, and got
help from some great defensive plays."
Lake Erie's only threat came in the fifth
inning when Kris Trifiletti ripped a pitch into right field but
junior Danah Merck was there to gun her at first from right.
Merck helped lead the Lady Rams by going
2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored while driving in two runs.
The Burleson, Texas native's double capped off a four-run inning
in the bottom half of the second to put Texas Wesleyan up 5-0.
In game two, freshman Tara Sharp (2-0)
took to the mound giving up only four hits in five innings of work
while striking out a season-high, six batters. Freshman Amanda Milam
led the offensive charge for the Lady Rams going 2-for-3 with two
runs scored and three RBI. The Wolfforth, Texas native's mammoth
3-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth broke a scoreless tie
as the Lady Rams never looked back, defeating the Lady Storm, 8-0.
"We came out and did exactly what
we needed and expected to do to win these games," head coach
David Barrientes said. "Maria simply pitched an outstanding
game for us."
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Tuesday,
when they travel to take on Texas Woman's University in a doubleheader
in Denton, Texas. First-pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
