RRAC All-Conference Team
FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior David
Johnson was selected as defensive player of the year and selected
to the first-team of the Red River All-Conference team on Monday.
Senior Wesley Haynes also picked up honorable mention honors as
well.
Johnson, who was selected as the
conference's best defender for the second consecutive season,
also picked up his second straight first-team selection. The Los
Angeles, Calif. native, averaged 15.7 points per game and led the
nation in block shots with 135 (4.1 blocks per game). The 6-10 forward
also was ninth in the nation in rebounds, averaging 9.3 boards per
game. In his 22 conference games, Johnson averaged 4.6 blocks per
game. He scored in double figures in 26 games this season and over
20 points in 10 games this season. He had 12 double-doubles and
an amazing triple-double against Huston-Tillotson (12/15). Johnson
finished that game with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks. It
was the second time he has done that in his career, doing it against
Huston-Tillotson last season as well. The senior finishes his Wesleyan
career as the schools career leader in block shots with 291 in his
two-year career.
"David changed the game like no player
I have ever had," head coach Terry Waldrop said. "He was
simply the most dominant player in the conference and probably the
country."
Haynes, who was the team's leading scorer
in conference-play (15.8 ppg), was selected as honorable mention
all-conference. The Hammond, La. native, averaged 14.5 points per
game and 8.4 rebounds
per game. The 6-4 guard also led the team in steals averaging 2.0
steals per game. He had eight double-doubles and scored in double
figures 24 times during the season. The senior also had eight games
where he scored 20 or more points.
"Wesley's will to win never ceased
to amaze me, even when we were struggling mightily during the second
half of the season, he stayed positive and I think he is a great
role model for not only our younger players, but also the entire
campus," Waldrop said. "I rarely speak out on all conference,
etc., however the fact that Wesley was not first or second-team
all conference is a joke. Looking on the list and seeing teams that
didn't even make the tournament with multiple players ahead of Haynes,
and even some that finished well above us with some very marginal
guys recognized really makes you question the entire process. There
simply was not a better small forward in the league and he proved
that night after night to virtually everyone we played."
