WORTH, Texas - Texas Wesleyan split a doubleheader against #2Oklahoma City,
Tuesday afternoon at LaGrave Field. The Rams came from behind to take game one,
4-3, but could not keep the momentum going as they lost game two, 8-2.
In
game one, Ram starting pitcher Erik Cartmill threw four innings, allowing three
runs on five hits while
striking out three batters. Reliever Ryan Cowgell (1-0) picked up the victory
for the Rams, throwing three shutout innings allowing only one hit while fanning
four batters.
The Stars (27-4) started off
strong scoring two runs in the first inning. Those runs came off of shortstop
Denver Kitch's two-run homer to put Oklahoma City up, 2-0. Second-baseman Cameron
Clarke's RBI double in the top of the third put the Stars up, 3-0.
The
Rams (10-10) started their comeback off shortstop Corey Stansell's RBI double
in the bottom of the fifth that scored secondbaseman Jason Diaz. Texas Weleyan
cut the lead to one after leftfielder Eric Vaughn's RBI single, which scored first
baseman Travis Clifford in the bottom of the sixth.
The
Rams tied the game up at 3-3, after catcher Matt Putman's sacrifice fly drove
in Stansell in the bottom of the seventh inning. After an error by Stars third
baseman Dave Marlett that loaded the bases, Vaughn's squeeze bunt single to drive
in junior Mark Smajstrla ended the game, 4-3. Vaughn finished the game going 2-for-4
with two key RBI.
"We had some timely
pitching and hitting in the first game," head coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "That
gave us an opportunity to win the ballgame."
In
game two, Oklahoma City's offense came alive as they went on to win, 8-2. Ram
starting pitcher, junior David Hinson (2-2) lasted four innings allowing three
runs on seven hits while striking out two batters.
The
Rams trimmed Oklahoma City 's 3-0 lead by two runs after third baseman Derek Armstrong's
RBI single and right fielder Nathan Murrell's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the
fourth. But the Stars put the game out of reach after putting up five runs in
the sixth inning.
"To split a doubleheader
against the number two-ranked team in the nation, feels that we are getting back
on the right track," Jeffcoat said. "Hopefully we can keep this up for
the rest of the spring break."
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action tomorrow when they host Waldorf College at LaGrave
