| FORT WORTH, Texas -
The Texas Wesleyan baseball team split a doubleheader with College of the Southwest
Friday afternoon at LaGrave Field. The Rams took game one, 4-2, but the offense
sputtered in game two as the Mustangs won, 4-1.
In
game one, both teams pushed across two runs in the second inning and it stayed
that way until the sixth inning. Left fielder Eric Vaughn and catcher Matt Putman
led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a pop-up by first baseman
Travis Clifford and a flyout by third baseman Derek Armstrong, designated hitter
Jason Diaz doubled in two runs to give the Rams a 4-2 lead.
"Jason
Diaz did a great job battling at the plate all afternoon," head coach Mike
Jeffcoat said. "He got the ball up in the jet stream and it carried over
the left fielder's head. Sometimes you get the breaks and sometimes you don't."
Ram
starting pitcher Shea Harrison took over from there, setting the Mustangs down
in order in the seventh. Harrison (2-3) picked up the victory, allowing two runs
on five hits, while striking out seven batters in seven innings of work.
Armstrong
also had two RBI on the day as he hit his second home run of the season in the
second inning.
In game two, College of the
Southwest scored all four of its runs in the first five innings. Texas Wesleyan
got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, when Armstrong drove in Diaz with
a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-1.
From
there, Mustang starting pitcher Ryan Peterson took over, allowing just one hit
over the final four innings. Peterson (6-0) allowed just one run, which was unearned,
on four hits, while walking six and striking out three batters in his complete
game victory.
Ram starting pitcher Drew Jeffcoat
(3-1) battled valiantly, allowing only three earned runs on five hits, while walking
three and striking out a season-high 13 batters. The Arlington, Texas native,
threw 145 pitches in his complete game loss.
"I
was very proud of both of our pitchers," Jeffcoat said. "Drew had an
outstanding performance and kept going out onto the mound, battling on adrenaline.
He was in a groove so I decided to let him pitch. We just need to take care of
things offensively if we are going to win those tight games." Putman
led the Rams, going 2-for-4 in game two. Armstrong finished the day, going 2-for-6
with three RBI. The senior now has a team-leading 23 RBI on the season. "It
is a good feeling to get that first victory," Jeffcoat said. "College
of the Southwest is a team similar to us. They have good pitching and defense
and it is always a battle between the two teams."
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday when they host College of the Southwest
in the series finale at LaGrave Field. First-pitch is set for 12 p.m.
