WORTH, Texas - The Texas Wesleyan baseball team split a doubleheader Monday
afternoon with Tabor College. The Blue Jays took game one, 8-6, while the Rams
won the second in extra innings, 4-3. In
game one, Tabor College (12-11) opened the scoring in the first inning pushing
across three runs. The tallied three hits and a sacrifice fly to capture the 3-0
lead.
Texas Wesleyan (14-13) fought back scoring two
runs in the bottom of the first. The Rams loaded the bases with one out. First
baseman Drew Jeffcoat then singled in a run and center fielder Eric Vaughn followed
with a RBI-single up the middle. The Rams
tied the game up, by scoring a run in the third inning. Catcher Matt Putman led
off the inning with a double to left field. Craven, who pinch-ran for Putman,
advanced to third base on a single by designated hitter Travis Clifford. Craven
advanced home when Clifford was caught stealing at second base. In
the fifth inning, Texas Wesleyan added three runs, when Clifford drove in two
runs on a single down the right field line. First baseman Justin Craven followed
with a sacrifice fly to right field to make the score, 6-3. In
the sixth inning, the Blue Jays exploded for five runs. They were helped by three
Ram errors and some timely hitting. They received RBI-singles from shortstop Grant
Brubacher and third baseman Kennan Morris, as the Blue Jays took an 8-6 lead.
Texas Wesleyan was unable to muster any offense
in the last two innings as it dropped game one. David
Miller (1-1) suffered the loss for the Rams, allowing eight runs, four of which
were earned, on nine hits, while striking out two batters and walking one.
In game two, Tabor College got on the board
in the first inning, as they scored an unearned run off of Ram starting pitcher
Eric Casias. The Rams fought back to take
the lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Putman racked up an RBI
during the inning. The Blue Jays tied the
game up in the second inning, as they used two hits and hit-by-pitch to make the
score, 2-2. With one out in the fourth inning,
second baseman Anthony Bolivar tripled down the right field line. Third baseman
Jarod Baker hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Bolivar and put the Rams ahead,
3-2. For Tabor College, Jeremy Ball reached
base on a bunt with one out in the fifth inning. He stole second base and scored
on a single by Brubacher to tie the game, 3-3. The
two teams would trade chances in the next two innings before Texas Wesleyan pushed
across the decisive run in the bottom of the eight inning. Bolivar led off with
a single through the left side. The Rams loaded the bases on consecutive bunt
singles by Baker and center fielder Mark Smajstrla. Bolivar then came home on
a wild pitch by Blue Jay reliever Layne Fricke. Ram
reliever Chad Martin (1-0) pick up his first victory of the season, by throwing
the last three innings, allowing one walk and striking out one batter. Clifford
led the Ram attack, going 5-for-7 with one run scored and two RBI on the day.
Bolivar went 4-for-7 with two runs scored, one of which was the decisive run in
the second game.
Texas Wesleyan will
be back in action Tuesday when they travel to take on conference-rival Paul Quinn
in Dallas. The doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
