WAXAHACHIE,
Texas - The Texas Wesleyan baseball team split a doubleheader with Southwestern
Assemblies of God Saturday afternoon in Red River Conference play at the
Waxahachie Sports Complex.
Texas Wesleyan
(19-16, 6-3 RRAC) took the opening game, 4-1, but the Lions (5-16, 1-5 RRAC) rebounded
to take the second game, 5-4 in 11 innings.
In
game one, the Rams scored their four runs off of only two hits. The key blow was
a two-run home run in the Rams three-run third inning.
Freshman
Drew Jeffcoat (4-1) picked up the victory for Texas Wesleyan allowing one run
on two hits, while walking one and striking out six batters in five innings of
work.
Junior Mark Smajstrla pitched the final
two innings, allowing three hits, while striking out two batters to pick up his
third save of the season.
In game two, Texas
Wesleyan jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the fourth inning as senior Derek
Armstrong ripped a two-run home run. The Lions then scored three unearned runs
in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead, 4-3. The Rams tied the score up
in the seventh inning, but SAGU won the game in the bottom of the 11th inning.
Senior Brad Shiller was the hard-luck loser
for the Rams as he allowed one run on four hits, while striking out two batters.
Ram starting pitcher Ryan Cowgell picked up a no-decision, allowing four runs,
only one was earned, on six hits, while walking two batters and striking out three
batters.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action
Tuesday when they travel to take on UT-Tyler. The single game is set for 6 p.m
