     WAXAHACHIE, Texas -
The Texas Wesleyan baseball team split a doubleheader with Southwestern Assemblies of God Saturday afternoon in Red River Conference play at the Waxahachie Sports Complex.

Texas Wesleyan (19-16, 6-3 RRAC) took the opening game, 4-1, but the Lions (5-16, 1-5 RRAC) rebounded to take the second game, 5-4 in 11 innings.

In game one, the Rams scored their four runs off of only two hits. The key blow was a two-run home run in the Rams three-run third inning.

Freshman Drew Jeffcoat (4-1) picked up the victory for Texas Wesleyan allowing one run on two hits, while walking one and striking out six batters in five innings of work.

Junior Mark Smajstrla pitched the final two innings, allowing three hits, while striking out two batters to pick up his third save of the season.

In game two, Texas Wesleyan jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the fourth inning as senior Derek Armstrong ripped a two-run home run. The Lions then scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead, 4-3. The Rams tied the score up in the seventh inning, but SAGU won the game in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Senior Brad Shiller was the hard-luck loser for the Rams as he allowed one run on four hits, while striking out two batters. Ram starting pitcher Ryan Cowgell picked up a no-decision, allowing four runs, only one was earned, on six hits, while walking two batters and striking out three batters.

Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to take on UT-Tyler. The single game is set for 6 p.m
