FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas
Wesleyan softball team won both games of a doubleheader against
conference-rival, Northwood University, Tuesday afternoon at Sycamore
Park. The Lady Rams won hard fought games by the scores of 2-1 and
2-1.
In
game one, Lady Ram starting pitcher Maria Morones pitched only three
innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out three
batters. Morones was replaced by freshman Tara Sharp (6-3) who finished
the game allowing only one hit in four shutout innings while striking
out six batters.
Texas Wesleyan (14-11, 4-0 RRAC)
fell behind early when Lady Knight's Jamie Manning singled in a
run in the second inning. The Lady Rams tied the game on an RBI
single in the bottom of the sixth inning by centerfielder Kamie
Lancaster to score sophomore Michelle Perez.
The Lady Rams took the first game
on a game-winning, RBI double by Rachel Hampton. Lancaster also
helped in the victory going 3-for-4 with a RBI.
"Northwood is a tough team,"
head coach David Barrientes said. "They stayed in the game
until the very end."
In game two, first baseman Tara Sharp's
RBI single in the bottom of the third inning put Texas Wesleyan
on the board first. Lady Ram starting pitcher Rachel Lamont (3-2)
threw seven strong innings allowing only one run on six hits while
striking out two batters.
The Lady Knights (11-18, 2-4 RRAC)
tied the game in the fourth inning on Jodie Wilcox's RBI single.
Texas Wesleyan regained the lead on a Vanessa Urteaga single in
the bottom of the fifth inning that scored right fielder Amanda
Macuch.
"This team is coming together
at the right time," Barrientes said. "The combination
of great pitching and solid defense were the key to today's victories."
The Lady Rams will be back in action
Friday, April 2nd, when they travel to take on Bacone College in
conference play. The doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
