FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas Wesleyan
softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to NCAA division
II Texas Woman's University on Wednesday afternoon at Sycamore Park.
The Lady Rams struggled both offensively and defensively against
Lady Pioneers, losing both games by virtue of run-rule, 17-0 and
11-2.
In game one, Lady Ram Tara Sharp (6-7)
threw five innings, giving up 17 runs on 15 hits while striking
out three batters. Sharp allowed a two-run homerun in the second
inning to give the Lady Pioneers a 6-0 lead. Sharp also gave up
a grandslam homerun to Lauren Gustartis in the top of the fifth
that capped off a seven run offensive attack by Texas Woman's University
(31-9) to lead them to a 17-0 run-rule victory.
The Lady Rams (15-18) committed six
errors that led to four unearned Lady Pioneer runs. Lady Pioneer
starting pitcher Lindsy Russ-Keller was trowing a perfect game going
into the bottom of the fifth, but leadoff single by Lady Ram catcher
Amanda Milam broke up her chances for it.
In game two, starting pitcher Milam
(1-3) went four innings allowing 10 runs on 13 hits while walking
one and striking out one batter. Rachel Lamont relieved Milam after
giving up a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to Lady Pioneer,
Gustartis, her second homerun on the day.
Down 4-0 going into the bottom of the third
inning, the Lady Rams posted two runs in their half of the inning.
Left fielder Rachel Hampton's leadoff homerun started the scoring
and the second run came on an error by Lady Pioneer pitcher Dawn
England that scored second baseman Michelle Perez. But a four-run
fourth inning for Texas Woman's sealed Texas Wesleyan's fate as
the Lady Rams failed to manage a hit after the third inning.
Texas Wesleyan managed only four hits
total for both games, two hits in the 17-0 loss in the first game,
and two hits in the 11-2 second game loss.
The Lady Rams will be back in action
Friday when host Houston Baptist University. The doubleheader is
scheduled for 2 p.m.
