April 26, 2004

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas Wesleyan softball team split a doubleheader against conference-rival, Texas College Monday afternoon at Sycamore Park. The Lady Rams blew out the Steers in the first game, 12-4, but lost the second game 7-4.

In game one, Lady Ram starting pitcher Rachel Lamont (7-7) threw five innings allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three batters.

Texas Wesleyan (21-26, 9-11 RRAC) scored early putting up a three-spot in the bottom of the first inning on a 2-RBI single by catcher Jennifer Perez and a RBI double by first baseman Tara Sharp. The Lady Rams added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to increase their lead, 6-1. Texas College cut the lead by two on the strength of Anastasia Nixon's two-run homerun in the top of the fourth inning.

The Lady Rams broke the game open in the bottom half of the fourth inning on the mammoth three-run homerun by left fielder Danah Merck. Texas Wesleyan ended the game on a two out fielding error on a single by designated player Amanda Milam that scored Jennifer Perez.

In game two, Texas College (11-18, 4-7 RRAC) got out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning. But the Lady Rams fought back to put up two runs of their own on the strength of a RBI single by Perez and a RBI triple by Milam to tie the game, 2-2. Lady Ram starting pitcher Tara Sharp (X-X) went seven innings allowing seven runs on eight hits while striking out four batters.

After a thirty-five minute injury delay in the third inning, Texas College posted a three-run inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Lady Rams managed just two more runs over the next four innings. Vanessa Urteaga helped to lead Texas Wesleyan going 4-for-4 with four singles, two walks, a RBI, and four runs scored.
