FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas
Wesleyan softball team split a doubleheader against conference-rival,
Texas College Monday afternoon at Sycamore Park. The Lady Rams blew
out the Steers in the first game, 12-4, but lost the second game
7-4.
In game one, Lady Ram starting pitcher
Rachel Lamont (7-7) threw five innings allowing four runs on five
hits while striking out three batters.
Texas Wesleyan (21-26, 9-11 RRAC)
scored early putting up a three-spot in the bottom of the first
inning on a 2-RBI single by catcher Jennifer Perez and a RBI double
by first baseman Tara Sharp. The Lady Rams added three more runs
in the bottom of the second inning to increase their lead, 6-1.
Texas College cut the lead by two on the strength of Anastasia Nixon's
two-run homerun in the top of the fourth inning.
The Lady Rams broke the game open
in the bottom half of the fourth inning on the mammoth three-run
homerun by left fielder Danah Merck. Texas Wesleyan ended the game
on a two out fielding error on a single by designated player Amanda
Milam that scored Jennifer Perez.
In game two, Texas College (11-18,
4-7 RRAC) got out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning.
But the Lady Rams fought back to put up two runs of their own on
the strength of a RBI single by Perez and a RBI triple by Milam
to tie the game, 2-2. Lady Ram starting pitcher Tara Sharp (X-X)
went seven innings allowing seven runs on eight hits while striking
out four batters.
After a thirty-five minute injury
delay in the third inning, Texas College posted a three-run inning
to take a 5-2 lead. The Lady Rams managed just two more runs over
the next four innings. Vanessa Urteaga helped to lead Texas Wesleyan
going 4-for-4 with four singles, two walks, a RBI, and four runs
scored.
