BRANCH, Texas - Texas Wesleyan went 2-2 in the opening day of the Red River
Athletic Conference Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Oren Good Park.
Texas
Wesleyan opened the tournament defeating UT-Permian Basin, 8-0. The Lady Rams
dropped the second game to Bacone College, 7-0 to fall into the loser's bracket.
There, Texas Wesleyan defeated Texas College, 6-4 in an elimination game, but
were eliminated themselves by Northwood, 3-0.
In
its opening-round game, Texas Wesleyan (23-28) opened the scoring in the second
inning when third baseman Rachel Hampton launched a 2-0 fastball down the leftfield
line for a home run. The Lady Rams added another run in the third inning,
when centerfielder Kamie Lancaster led off with a single to centerfield. She moved
to third on error by the catcher and scored on a sacrifice fly by left fielder
Danah Merck, to put them up, 2-0.
The Lady
Rams poured it on in the fourth inning, scoring four runs. They picked up RBI-singles
from Lancaster and second baseman Vanessa Urtega. They also received a two-RBI
double from Merck to increase the lead to 6-0.
UT-Permian
Basin (3-18) never could get anything going as Lady Ram starting pitcher Rachel
Lamont kept them off-balance all game. It could only manage two hits.
Texas
Wesleyan closed the game out, scoring two runs in the fifth inning on a bases
loaded walk by shortstop Becky Lamont and a RBI-fielder's choice by Lancaster.
The Lady Rams won by run-rule, 8-0.
Lamont
picked up the victory, allowing just two hits in a complete-game shutout. She
also struck out four batters.
In the second
game of the day, the number two seed Bacone College (49-5-1) got on the board
in the first inning, when Jessica Dean produced a RBI-single to put the Lady Warriors
ahead, 1-0. The Lady Warriors increased the lead, 2-0, when Bianca Oakley drew
a bases-loaded walk.
Bacone College busted
it open in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on two hits and one Lady Ram error
to put the Lady Warriors ahead, 6-0. Bacone College pushed another run across
in the sixth inning for the final outcome.
Tara
Sharp suffered the loss for the Lady Rams, allowing six runs, four of which were
earned, on seven hits, while walking five and striking out three batters in five
innings of work.
The Lady Rams were only
able to scratch out one hit, as Rachel Hampton doubled in the fifth inning.
In
game three of the day, Texas Wesleyan jumped ahead of Texas College (20-23) early,
scoring three runs in the second inning. The Lady Rams received an RBI-double
from Hampton and RBI-fielder's choices from right fielders Amanda Macuch and Becky
Lamont to make the score, 3-0.
In the third
inning, the Lady Rams added two more runs, pounding out three more hits and capitalizing
on a Lady Steer error. Jennifer Perez had a RBI-single and Macuch had another
RBI-fielder's choice to push the score to, 5-0.
Texas
College got a run back in the fifth inning, when Del Bosque reached on a one-out
single, advanced to second on a error by Lamont and scored on a single by Hayes
to cut the lead to, 5-1.
The Lady Rams put
another run on the board, when Merck reached on an error, stole second and scored
on a double by Hampton to make it 6-1.
The
Lady Steers made it tough on Texas Wesleyan as they scored three runs in the seventh
inning, but reliever Maria Morones came in to nail down the save, retiring the
last two batters.
Rachel Lamont (9-7) picked
up her second victory of the day, allowing four runs, three of which were earned,
on six hits, while walking two and striking out two batters in 6.1 innings of
work.
In the final game of the night, Northwood
got on the board early, scoring a run in the first inning on a RBI-single by J
Mitchell to put the Lady Knights ahead, 1-0.
Northwood
tacked on two unearned runs in the fifth inning as the Lady Rams committed two
errors to put the Lady Knights ahead for good, 3-0.
Texas
Wesleyan managed only two singles, coming from Macuch and Merck.
Sharp
was the hard-luck loser, allowing three runs, on of which was earned, on four
hits, while walking four and striking out two batters.
With
the two loses on the day, Texas Wesleyan ends its season at 23-28.
