AUSTIN, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (5-7, 3-1 RRAC) got back in the win column with a 67-59 win over Red River Athletic Conference foe Huston-Tillotson University (1-6, 1-3).

H-TU closed the first half with an 11-7 run to take a 37-31 lead at the break.  Texas Wesleyan regained the lead when Britney Helton got a steal and hit Tiffany Hill for a layup to bring the score to 41-40 with 16:35 to play.

With six minutes to play, TWU was still nursing a one-point lead at 56-55 after a pair of free throws by Mauri Johnson.  The Lady Rams quickly stretched the lead to 62-55 with just under three minutes to play.  H-TU cut the lead to five, but could get no closer as the Lady Rams closed out the 67-59 win.

Tiffany Hill had an outstanding game for Texas Wesleyan, leading the way with 14 points and a career-high 10 steals.  Mauri Johnson finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds.  H-TU’s Ashley Taylor led all scorers with 23 points.

H-TU out shot Texas Wesleyan 35%-32% while Texas Wesleyan won the battle of the boards 52-49.  The difference in the contest proved to be Wesleyan’s defense, which forced 33 turnovers that led to 30 points for the Lady Rams.

Texas Wesleyan returns to the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday, January 14, when they host Texas A&M International in RRAC play.  That game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a men’s game.
