MARSHALL, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (10-9, 8-3) rebounded from a conference loss on Saturday to take a 70-62 win at Wiley College on Monday.
In the first half, the Lady Rams won the battle of the boards 23-20 and out shot the Wildcats 33%-30%. However, after 21 Texas Wesleyan turnovers, the Lady Rams found themselves trailing 28-21 at the break.
In the second half, the Rams turned the tables forcing 21 Wiley turnovers. Texas Wesleyan started the second half with a 24-5 run to take a 54-33 lead with 12 minutes to play. Wiley closed the gap to four points at 49-45 with under five minutes remaining, but the Lady Rams quickly stretched the lead back to double-figures at 56-45.
In the final minute, the Wildcats cut the deficit to five points at 65-60, but it was too little to late as the Rams held on for the 70-62 win.
Shawndrika Courtney led the Lady Rams by scoring all of her game-high 17 points in the second half. Courtney also pulled down 10 rebounds. Stephanie Reder added 14 points for the Rams while Britney Helton and Tiffany Hill each finished with 12. Jazmin King led the Wildcats with 14 points.
The Lady Rams will return to action on Thursday, February 2, when they travel to Tyler, TX, to take on Texas College. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a men’s game.
