TYLER, TX: The Texas Wesleyan women’s basketball team (11-9, 9-3 RRAC), traveled to Tyler, TX, on Thursday and came home with a 58-49 win over Texas College. An otherwise exciting game and an important Red River Athletic Conference win was marred by the loss of junior guard, Britney Helton who was taken to the emergency room midway through the second half with a possible broken ankle.
Initial x-rays revealed no brake in Helton’s right ankle; however, she will be reevaluated on Friday. Helton was named RRAC Player of the week after scoring a career-high 24 points at Paul Quinn in January. She has averaged nearly 15 points in her last 7 games, and is averaging over 11 for the season.
In the first half, the Lady Rams held the Lady Steers to just 22% shooting and led 23-18 at the break.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan stretched their lead to 9 at 41-39 with nine minutes to play. Texas College cut the deficit to 3 at 47-44 with five minutes on the clock, but they would get no closer.
Texas Wesleyan held the Steers to just 26% shooting on the game, won the battle-of-the-boards 61-53, and pulled away for the 58-49 win.
Shawndrika Courtney led the Rams with 18 points. Tiffany Hill turned in an outstanding performance with 9 points, 7 assists, 5 steals, and 16 points.
The Lady Rams will return to action on Saturday, February 4, when they host Langston University in the Sid Richardson Center. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a men’s game.
