FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (11-10) suffered an 87-62 loss at the hands of Langston University (16-4) in the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
The Rams held the Lions scoreless for the first 6:38 and jumped ahead 8-0. Texas Wesleyan led by as many as 10 at 16-6, but Langston chipped away and took its first lead at 25-23 with 5:07 on the clock. At the midway point, the Lions held a 37-32 advantage.
For much of the second half, the two teams went back-and-forth and Texas Wesleyan remained in striking distance at 66-59 with less than five minutes to play. With 3:20 on the clock, Matay McBath-Belvin hit a three to essentially put the game out of reach at 72-60. McBath-Belvin went on to score 10 of her game-high 21 points in the final 3:20 as the Lions pulled away for the 87-62 win.
The Lions made up for 25 turnovers by out shooting the Rams 43%-38% and out rebounding the Rams 53-41.
Shawndrika Courtney led the Rams with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Tiffany Hill finished with 15 points and Pilar Pinkus added 10 points. McBath-Belvin finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Lions.
Texas Wesleyan will return to action on Monday, January 6, when they travel to Muskogee, OK, to take on Bacone College in Red River Athletic Conference action. That game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be followed by a men’s game.
