FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (12-12, 10-5 RRAC) edged out Huston-Tillotson University (4-15, 3-11) in Red River Athletic Competition on Monday. The Lady Rams took a 54-52 win in the Sid Richardson Center.
In the first half, Huston-Tillotson jumped ahead 24-14, but a pair of layups from Pilar Pinkus and a three-pointer from Britney Helton cut the deficit to three at 24-21. Texas Wesleyan later tied the game at 27 on a layup from Shawndrika Courtney. After H-TU’s Ashley Davis hit one of two free throws, Mauri Johnson drove the length of the court and beat the buzzer with a layup to put Texas Wesleyan on top 29-28 at the break.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan led by as many as six at 49-43 with 7:10 on the clock. H-TU regained the lead with an 8-1 run bringing the score to 51-50 with 3:20 to play. With 24 seconds remaining, Courtney hit a pair of free throws to give Texas Wesleyan a 53-51 edge. With nine seconds to go, Tiffany Hill hit one of two from the charity stripe to give the Lady Rams a 54-52 lead. H-TU then brought the ball up the court, but Candis Mosley’s desperation shot was well off and Texas Wesleyan escaped with the 54-52 win.
Texas Wesleyan committed 30 turnovers, but forced 23 H-TU miscues. The Lady Rams also out shot H-TU 35%-30% and won the battle of the boards 48-45.
Shawndrika Courtney led the Lady Rams with 24 points and 17 rebounds. H-TU’s Ashley Davis also finished with a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards.
The Lady Rams will return to action on Thursday, February 16, when they travel to Laredo, TX, to take on Texas A&M International University in Red River Athletic Conference action. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a men’s game.
