WACO, TX: For the sixth time this season and the third consecutive week, Texas Wesleyan University’s Ben Hunt has been selected as the Red River Athletic Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. For the period of February 13-19, Hunt shared the honor with Houston Baptist University’s Dwight Jones II.
Hunt, a senior guard from Bendigo, Australia, continued to lead a red-hot Texas Wesleyan team last week. He racked up 43 points while shooting 70% from the field and 77% from long range as the Rams won two more conference games last week.
Hunt made 6-of-9 three-point attempts en route to 27 points, six rebounds, and four assists in a 102-80 win over Huston-Tillotson University. He also scored 16 points and grabbed four boards in an 88-57 win over Texas A&M International University while sinking 6-of-8 field goal attempts. Over the two games, Hunt made 10-of-13 three-pointers. After a tough loss to UTPB last night, the Rams sit in second place in the conference with a 13-4 record and a 17-8 mark overall.
Jones, a junior guard from Houston, averaged 21.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for HBU. In a 90-84 win over Texas College, he accounted for 29 points, five rebounds and three assists. He followed that with 14 points and nine boards in 118-69 runaway win over Paul Quinn College (Texas). For the week, Jones made 19-of-36 field goal attempts as HBU maintained its conference lead at 16-2 in league play. The Huskies are 20-5 overall.
Texas Wesleyan fans have just two more chances to catch the high flying Rams in the Sid Richardson Center this season. They will return to action on Thursday, February 23, when they try to avenge an overtime loss against Bacone College. That game, which is the final test before a senior night showdown with Paul Quinn College on Saturday, is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center and will be preceded by a women’s game.
