DENTON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (0-4) was swept in a doubleheader at Texas Woman’s University (6-11) on Wednesday. The Pioneers topped the Lady Rams 7-6 in game one and took the night cap 14-6.
In game one, the Rams scored a run in their first opportunity when freshman Alicia Wylie led off with a single up the middle, advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Brooke McNabb, and later scored on a failed pickoff attempt.
The Lady Rams added a pair of runs in the third. Marie Stone started the two-out rally with a single. Tara Sharp then greeted new pitcher Lindsay Russ-Keller with a two-run home run to left center.
The Pioneers got on the board in the fourth when Rhonda Sherman crossed the plate for an unearned run. In the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers took a 4-3 lead with three runs on three hits and an error. They added another unearned run in the sixth to bring the score to 5-3.
The Rams rallied in their final at bat and took a 6-5 lead after plating three runs on four hits. The frame was highlighted by a two-RBI double from Tana Sharp who then scored on a double from Rachel Hampton.
Unfortunately the Rams could not put the game away in the seventh. The Pioneers started the inning with three consecutive singles to tie the game, and Sherman followed with a game-winning double.
Tara Sharp led Texas Wesleyan at the plate, going 3-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. Marie Stone (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits in 1.2 innings of work. Amanda Chambless (2-1) earned the win by allowing 4 runs on 9 hits in 4.1 innings.
In game two, the Rams once again got on the board first when Marie Stone drew a walk and later scored on an error. However, Texas Wesleyan dug a hole in the bottom of the first by allowing 10 runs on just two hits. The Lady Rams committed three errors and allowed five walks in the inning.
The Rams continued to fight, scoring three runs in a second inning highlighted by a two-run triple from Alicia Wylie. The Pioneers scored two runs in the third and the two teams traded a pair of runs in the fifth for the 14-6 final.
Wylie led the Rams by going 2-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Rachel Lamont (0-1) suffered the loss. Ashley Martin (3-6) allowed 4 runs in 4 innings and was credited with the win.
Texas Wesleyan will return to action on Saturday, February 25, when they travel to Austin, TX, to take on St. Edward’s University. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
