WAXAHACHIE, TX: The 4th seeded Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (15-15) suffered a 63-50 loss at the hands of 5th seeded Bacone College in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday.
The two teams split the regular season series, each taking a win at home. In the first half of today’s contest, the Lady Rams led throughout, taking their largest lead at 27-18 with 1:46 on the clock. Bacone’s Kelly Quillman cut the lead to six with a three pointer with just over a minute to play. The Warriors cut the lead to three, 27-24, at the break when Camille Thompson hit a half-court shot at the buzzer.
That momentum shift carried over into the second half, and Bacone grabbed its first lead at 31-29 when Quillman hit from long range with 16:20 on the clock. Mauri Johnson gave the lead back to the Lady Rams, 35-36, with a jumper midway through the period, but the Warriors rattled off 11 unanswered points to take control at 47-36.
The Lady Rams were able to cut the deficit to five at several points including 55-50 with 1:21 to play. Unfortunately the Warriors were able to pull away in the final minute for the 63-50 win.
The Warriors out shot the Rams 38%-30% and out rebounded Texas Wesleyan 50-33. Johnson led the Rams with 15 points. Bacone’s Candice Halloway led all scorers with 17 points.
The loss ends Texas Wesleyan’s season at an even 15-15. At 13-7 in conference play, the Rams finished 4th in the Red River regular season standings.
The game was the final game for three outstanding seniors. Shawndrika Courtney climbed to fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,348 points. Her 118 career blocks are a school record. Stephanie Reder set school records this season with 7 three pointers and 77.8% (7-9) three point shooting in a win over Southwestern Assemblies of God. Tiffany Hill set career highs this season in scoring (178), steals (81), and assists (137).
