WACO, TX: Marie Stone of Texas Wesleyan University was named Red River Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and was also named Region VI Player of the Week, while Laura Hess of Houston Baptist University (Texas) was recognized as the RRAC Softball Player of the Week for the second time this season for the dates of March 13-19.
Stone, a senior pitcher/first baseman from Pittsburg, Texas, kept a hot bat this week by going 7-of-10 at the plate with four home runs as the Lady Rams swept a double-header matchup with Concordia University (Texas). In the opener, she went 4-for-6 hitting with a pair of home runs, a double and four RBI as TWU won, 19-10. She followed with a 3-for-4 performance with two more solo homers in a 9-4 drubbing. For the two games, Stone accounted for eight runs and six RBI as she raised her slugging percentage for the season to .985. TWU moved to 14-6 overall.
Hess, a senior pitcher from Pasadena, Texas, racked up two more victories last week while allowing just one earned run. She sank Prairie View A&M University (Texas) by scattering three hits and striking out six for a 9-1 win, and she registered a complete game four-hit shutout to stop Texas Southern University, 4-0. For the week, Hess had nine strikeouts and four walks as she surged to 8-3 on the season. Hess is 90 strikeouts shy of the all-time HBU record for strikeouts, held by Jennifer Elias with 724. HBU is now 13-7 on the season.
