FORT WORTH, TX: A frigid day with the wind blowing in could not slow down the bats of the Texas Wesleyan University softball team (16-8). The Lady Rams swept a doubleheader from Haskell Indian Nations Reserve University, 5-1 and 7-3, on Thursday. Marie Stone’s home run in game two gave the Lady Rams 46 on the season setting a new NAIA single season record.
The Lady Rams have hit at least one home run in 17 of their first 24 games this season. They hit a school record six home runs in a 19-10 win at Concordia-Austin, hitting 11 in that doubleheader on March 14. They have also hit five home runs on two occasions.
Tara Sharp has already set the school’s single season record with 15 home runs. Meanwhile, Rachel Hampton’s 24 career homers match the Texas Wesleyan record.
In game one on Thursday, sister’s Rachel and Kelly Lamont combined on a two-hitter in a 5-1 win. Rachel received the win while younger sister Kelly earned her first career save.
In game two, the Rams trailed 3-2 in the third when they struck for four runs on six hits and a Haskell error. In the fourth, Marie Stone cracked her 11th home run of the year, giving the Rams a 7-3 cushion and a new NAIA record.
Devin Blew worked five nearly perfect innings for the win, allowing just one walk while striking out two.
The Lady Rams will return to action on Saturday when they travel to the College of the Southwest, in Hobbs, NM, for an RRAC doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
