FORT WORHT, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team improved to 20-8 overall and 8-0 in Red River Athletic Conference play with a sweep of College of the Southwest and UT-Permian Basin this weekend. The weekend was highlighted by a two-out, three-run homer off the bat of Rachel Hampton in the top of the seventh of game two against UTPB on Saturday. That home run gave Hampton 25 career round-tripper’s, a new Texas Wesleyan University record.
On Saturday, the Rams defeated CSW in game one 8-0 on the strength of Devin Blew’s first no-hitter. Blew allowed just two walks in a complete game, six inning, effort.
The Lady Rams took game two 7-1. Rachel Lamont earned the win by tossing seven innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out a career-high ten batters.
In game one on Sunday, Alicia Wylie drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a stolen base, and scored on an Ariel Raley triple, giving the Lady Rams a 1-0 lead. Texas Wesleyan put the game out of reach when they scored six runs on three hits and three UTPB errors in the fourth inning. The frame was highlighted by a two-out grand slam off the bat of Marie Stone, and the Rams went on to win 8-2.
Stone’s four RBI led the team while Raley went 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Stone also got the job done on the mound, earning the win with a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six.
Game two was a pitchers’ duel through four innings of play. Jennifer Parker held the Rams’ potent offense to just one hit in the first four frames. Meanwhile, Devin Blew allowed just four hits in the game while recording her second shutout in as many days.
In the fifth, Texas Wesleyan put three runs on the board with an RBI double from Jazmine Boss, an RBI triple from Alicia Wylie, and an RBI single from Ariel Raley. The Rams scored one more in the sixth, and a three-run bomb from Rachel Hampton in the seventh led to the final score of 7-0. The home run from Hampton set a new school record for home runs in a career. Hampton has surpassed Monica Barrilleaux’s (2000-2003) mark of 24.
Blew tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and no walks while striking out three. Raley and Elizabeth Brady each had two hits while Hampton led the squad with three RBI.
The Lady Rams return to action when they host UTPB in an RRAC doubleheader on Friday, March 31, at Sycamore Park. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
